Creating a Dreamy Outdoor Oasis

JSJ Builders

There is no argument that this summer has been a doozy when it comes to high temperatures and humidity. Even those who thrive in North Carolina’s hottest season are spending more time inside this summer than is typical. But don’t despair! In the blink of an eye, cooler temperatures will arrive. Why not spend these days reimagining outdoor spaces so that they are ready for those cooler temperatures that will beckon us back to lingering outside?

One of the many reasons homebuyers are drawn to JSJ Builders’ new construction homes is the versatility of the lots on which they are placed. Spacious yards full of possibilities are easily accessed from enchanting patios and covered porches. Many new residents opt for a fully covered, screened-in porch–giving them instant square footage tucked right into the beautiful outdoors. Are you ready to create a backyard oasis? Now is the ideal time to get started.

Where to begin? Start with your imagination! What unique and creative features will you include? For some, it may be a backyard filled to the brim with flower beds. For others, activities will be the priority. If you plan on hosting outdoor events, you’ll want to include plenty of seating options but if you prefer quieter moments, less may be more.

  • Measure Your Space: Determine the size of your backyard and decide how you might divide that space into sections. A firepit is a common addition to backyards, for instance, but they do take up quite a bit of space. An outdoor cooking area is a great idea and can be built with a minimal footprint. Create a wish list of uses for your space and estimate how much room each will require.
  • Set a Budget: With a range of options to choose from, creating an outdoor oasis can be as affordable or as extravagant as you’d like. Your initial budget will help prioritize spending and should include all the extras such as plants or lighting. A budget will also help determine if transforming your space will be a one-and-done, large project or one that is completed in multiple phases. If you opt to take your time, prioritize the order in which you will install new features.

Focal Points versus Zones: For a fabulous backyard finish, start with its focal point. This will be the star of your outdoor space and serve as the anchor for additional features.

  • Focal Points: Common focal points include an outdoor dining area, a fountain or small pond, or a fire pit. Other options include a unique piece of outdoor art or a beautiful shade tree. Willow trees make a fantastic statement and love North Carolina’s climate. If you have young children, your focal point might include a swing set or play area.
  • Zones: Adjacent to your focal point will be any zones designed for a specific function. These may include a more intimate dining area, a spot to kick back with a favorite book, vegetable or flower gardens, or a splash pad. As you plan your zones, think about the flow of to access each. Stepping stones are a terrific way to create paths from one area to the next though strategic placement of furniture can also work.

Must-haves: Once you’ve assessed and mapped out plans for your outdoor space, it will be time to start its transformation! There are a few items that many new homeowners gravitate to.

  • Seating: Arguably the most important item in creating a place you want to spend time is comfortable and functional seating. Consider this a splurge item if working on a budget and invest in high-quality outdoor furniture that will withstand the elements. As you shop, give each piece a thorough test drive! While chairs or lounges with plush cushions are tempting, remember that those cushions will need to be covered or brought indoors when not in use. Hammocks are a terrific addition as they are inviting, cozy, and dry out quickly should liquid sunshine arrive. Daybeds are also delightful, but it is best to keep them under cover on a porch.
  • Fire Elements: Fire pits are available for nearly every budget and design preference making them the most popular addition to outdoor spaces. Options range from small and portable to large, stone fireplaces–all extending the usability of backyards when temperatures drop. Placement is key when it comes to fire elements as safety should be the priority. Installation of fire elements should be away from your home, away from flammable materials, and provide adequate ventilation.
  • Water Features: The tranquility of water is underestimated. The soft sound of trickling water creates an instant sense of calm while also drowning out unwanted noise. Fountains, bird baths, a small pond, or even a mini-waterfall are all terrific ways to inject a spa-like feeling into outdoor spaces.
  • Shade and Shelter: For full comfort, it is ideal to have shade and shelter in a backyard oasis. Residents of the area are lucky to enjoy gorgeous, sunny days but there are times when the cool air of a covered area becomes a necessity. Consider oversized umbrellas away from your home’s porch or, perhaps, opt for a gazebo on your property line. The additional shelter is beneficial for comfort, pop-up showers, and defining individual zones.

Great lighting and climate-appropriate plants are also essential in creating a serene and inviting outdoor space. Once your backyard transformation is complete, kick up its ambiance with overhead string lights, pathway lights, or by highlighting your focal point. Solar LED lights are a terrific low-maintenance, easy-install option. For plants, choose a mixture of perennials and annuals, opting for native species that are accustomed to your climate. This will mean less watering and maintenance while providing year-round beauty.

Moving into a newly built home is exciting and often creates enthusiasm for personalizing each of its spaces. For central North Carolina’s residents of JSJ Builders’ homes, those spaces include gorgeous patios and porches that spill out into spacious backyards. Now is the time to create a tranquil retreat that reflects your style, meets your needs, and will be used for years to come!
